Flickr Madness

David Lozeau

I recently won a fun twitter contest offered by pinstriping artist David Lozeau. If you’ve not see his work you should check out his Flickr stream or his iPhone wallpapers (which he’s done as well) and am happy to share them, obviously all the work is Davids, I merely did a little cropping and scaling.

Partly Cloudy

What started as a small icon for a new project has turned into something a little bit bigger. I’ve needed weather icons over and over again, and haven’t found any that really fit my style and are flexible and open to tweaking. So I’ve decided to create a my own set from scratch – with my style. I’ll be distributing the final icons here at the site and will also distribute the PSD for a small fee. Here’s the breakdown, if there’s something you don’t see leave a comment and let me know.

WordPress HelpCenter

Crowd Favorite was pleased to announce WordPress HelpCenter earlier this week. WordPress HelpCenter fills a support role for WordPress users looking for help with their WP issues. You can see the details on the site or Alex’s article. Looks like this be a successful endeavor and most certainly be accepted and used by the community. I’m proud to have been a small part in getting this out the door and look forward to seeing where it goes.

Curve-tacular

I’ve setup a new site for pics of the kids and just wanted to share the banner image I’m using. I dig it, finally starting to embrace the styles and techniques my dad taught me about years ago. As the son of a pinstriper I’m pretty conservative – well that’s changing…

BMW DesignWorks

Develop3D has an interesting look into BMW DesignWorks in LA. Would love it if they could share some photos, but completely understand why that’s a no-no.

Porsche has a similar consultancy, Porsche Design. I’d love to see more tech products from these firms, but typically they just don’t work out.

SXSW Spec Panel

Absolutely enthralling to watch. I have a much thought on this but just want to make a couple of points:

  1. Getting Started – Everyone has to start somewhere, but if you start out not respecting the value you bring to the table you’ll never come out of it. Your time and talents have value, but more importantly you represent all the people who do what you do. Need some portfolio fodder? Get off your butt and talk to people, find non-profits, small businesses and independents that value work enough to pay and respect what you do.
  2. The Blacklist – If you see yourself getting a great agency gig, or having a thriving business watch out. If you start running in circles with self-respecting design folks and they find out this is your money-maker don’t expect to be part of the party. Just as the internet enables collaboration on good things, it also allows for discovery of everything, you won’t go unnoticed. Personally I’ll swing through to see the businesses using these sites, and make a note not to do business with them. I can make a lot of assumptions from their participation and none are too positive. I can understand trying to save money but imagine your business or profession run this way and let me know your thoughts.
  3. You will always get what you pay for. Never forget that.
  4. P.S. Why does Owyang have his laptop on stage for this…sorta begs the question about why he’s on the panel at all, but that’s another topic.

This has roiled up again because of the discussion about the Carsonified slide design contest. I have to say that I deeply respect Mark Boulton but have to disagree that what Ryan is doing is somehow different than Threadless. Ryan is appealing to his fans, community and designers who appreciate what he and his conferences are about to provide a design for an image. That’s no different than submitting a shirt design – except in this instance Ryan is generating no direct revenue from that work, none. It’s a slide, shown on a screen while people mill about. That’s not to say it’s not valuable real estate to have you company logo up there, it certainly is. But this work done as a fan of the brand, just like Threadless, to be part of something, not just a quick logo churned out by someone who simply knows illustrator for some cheap CPA in Nebraska who put a spec up on crowdspring.
