The Path Ahead

I’ve not been one to have resolutions, or at least I’ve not stuck to them. It’s possible last year I resolved to get as fat as possible, if so then check that one off the list I guess. What I am looking at for 2009 is to work on some basic themes, a daily drumbeat of ideas and direction.

Themes for 2009:

Focus
I need to work to focus on where I can do the best work, gain the most ground and have the most fun. This will be a big effort for a guy with 8 Safari sessions and 35 tabs open, but bit by bit I’ll get there. I’ve already announced one way I’m making this a reality, more to come. This goes for friends and family as much as work. Simplifying and shedding the baggage.

Health
Goes without saying I need to revamp this area of my life. I have a family to take care of and a future I want to protect. We can be dead broke and live in a van but as long as we’re safe and healthy we can find happiness. At the rate I’m going…let’s just say I need to do some hard work and buckle down.

Learning to Say No
I have a lot of wonderful friends, a lot of talented people that enjoy helping out. In retrospect this year I did a lot of ‘hey couldya’ work. Unfortunately I’ve got to say no to this kind of stuff going forward, at least when I feel saying yes will jeopardize the above themes. Always ask, but be understanding if I have to pass.

Personal Growth
Improving communication, improving attention to detail and working everyday to be and do better than the previous. I also want to take better pictures, someone needs to help me with that.

Positively Positive
Find the positive in all situations and stop defeatist thinking. I have the keys to a castle, I need to stop complaining that it’s not the right color.

More Music Less Moving Pictures
Work to fill this house with music rather than the white noise of evening news and ab-roller commercials. As a musician for half my life this should be much easier than I’m making it. Focus.

Build Shit
Simple, clear. I have sketchbooks and mockups and snippets for dozens of projects, apps, tools, etc. Who cares? It’s now a matter of building them, and investing real money if needed on the winners.
